The five limbs of the panchang
- Tithi: the lunar day, every 12 degrees of the Moon's distance from the Sun; 30 in a lunar month.
- Vaar: the weekday, counted from sunrise to sunrise.
- Nakshatra: the lunar mansion the Moon occupies, one of 27 divisions of 13°20'.
- Yoga: from the sum of the Sun's and Moon's longitudes; 27 in all.
- Karana: half a tithi; Vishti (Bhadra) is avoided for auspicious work.
Common questions
What is Rahu Kaal?
Rahu Kaal is one of the eight equal parts of the daytime (sunrise to sunset), fixed by the weekday. New and auspicious work is traditionally not started in it.
Why does the panchang differ by city?
Sunrise and sunset change with location, and the tithi and nakshatra of the day are taken at local sunrise; Rahu Kaal and Choghadiya are counted from local sunrise too.
What is Choghadiya?
The day and the night are each divided into eight parts called Choghadiya. Amrit, Shubh and Labh are good, Char is good for travel, and Udveg, Kaal and Rog are avoided for important work.
